OSRM 26.9.0 routes through pedestrian areas and plazas for the first time.
OSRM 26.9.0 delivers native pedestrian area routing using mesh triangulation and visibility graph computation. Routes can now originate from any point inside a pedestrian area, plazas up to 256 vertices are solved at query time, and table/trip queries across plazas work consistently with standard routing. A bicycle turn-restriction fix and POST support for the nearest API also ship in this release. The 26.8.0 release that preceded it was maintenance-only.

NSD is in a security-intensive maintenance phase with a consistent external contributor: Qifan Zhang at Palo Alto Networks has reported the majority of bugs fixed in the 4.15.x cycle, including heap overflows, assertion failures on malformed records, and multiple DoS vectors. This external security research pressure is accelerating the quality of NSD's defensive posture. Protocol completeness work (new RR types, SVCB parameters) continues alongside the security fixes.
The PROXYv2 improvements suggest NSD deployments behind TLS-terminating load balancers are a growing use case — expect additional configuration controls for encrypted-DNS setups. The experimental multi-catalog-consumer-zones flag may graduate to stable in a future release.

OSRM has been investing in routing fidelity for complex urban geometries. Plaza/area routing represents a conceptual expansion beyond edge-and-node graph routing to area-based routing — a hard computational problem that the team has approached incrementally. The POST support expansion is modest but signals an interest in API flexibility for programmatic use cases.
Expect stability and edge-case fixes for the new area routing code in subsequent patches — the mesa triangulation solver is new and will encounter production edge cases. POST support expansion to other endpoints is a likely follow-on.
