What is Node-RED?

Both lines patch on the same day, and the reverted JSONata upgrade finally sticks.

Node-RED shipped 5.0 in June 2026 after a long beta, raising the runtime floor to Node.js 22.9, and the work since has been stabilisation. This pair patches both lines within ninety minutes: 5.0.5 fixes group fill defaults and opacity, an uncaught exception in the json node on malformed input with a schema, tlsConfigDisableLocalFiles, and multiplayer event property validation; 4.1.14 takes the multiplayer fix, a themes locale lookup error, and the same dependency work. JSONata 2.2.2 lands on both lines, the version that was reverted in July after a behaviour regression.

What is Webmin?

Webmin absorbs Linux subsystems one module at a time, with access controls tightening underneath.

Webmin ships every few weeks as a paired release with Usermin, and the visible window runs from 2.641 in May to 2.660 in August. The substantial release is 2.650, which added modules for systemd services and units, the GRUB 2 boot loader and the Kea DHCP server, along with basic Alpine Linux support. Since then the work has narrowed to storage and packaging detail: Btrfs subvolume quota management, vfsv1 quota files above 4 TiB, APT package holds and incremental Fail2Ban ban times.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

The 4.1 line is not winding down. It has now received same-day parallel releases twice, and the fixes crossing over are correctness rather than security this time, which is a wider commitment than backporting sanitisation patches. The defects still cluster in the editor surfaces 5.0 rewrote — groups, multiplayer, tree lists — rather than in the runtime, which is the expected shape after a major that focused on the editor.

◆ Prediction

JSONata 2.2.2 going out on both lines after July's revert suggests the upstream regression is resolved, so the next patches likely return to editor defects rather than dependency churn. The release notes give no timeline.

Webmin absorbs Linux subsystems one module at a time, with access controls tightening underneath.

◆ Current state

Webmin ships every few weeks as a paired release with Usermin, and the visible window runs from 2.641 in May to 2.660 in August. The substantial release is 2.650, which added modules for systemd services and units, the GRUB 2 boot loader and the Kea DHCP server, along with basic Alpine Linux support. Since then the work has narrowed to storage and packaging detail: Btrfs subvolume quota management, vfsv1 quota files above 4 TiB, APT package holds and incremental Fail2Ban ban times.

◆ Where it's heading

Two lines run in parallel. One extends the range of Linux subsystems Webmin can administer, adding a module wherever the distributions have moved: systemd, Kea, nftables, Netplan, Alpine. The other tightens what an authenticated user is permitted to do. Release 2.652 added a per-user ACL blocking URL downloads from non-public IP addresses and enforced file access ACLs on local imports across the database and directory modules, while 2.650 fixed a reflected XSS and made RPC-only accounts fail before module ACL checks. For a panel that runs as root on other people's servers, the second line is the more consequential one.

◆ Prediction

Expect the module-per-subsystem pattern to keep tracking whatever the distributions adopt next, and further ACL work in the modules that fetch remote URLs or import local files, since that is where the last two releases found problems.
