A side-by-side editorial comparison of n8n and OpenEMM — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
n8n patches how agents resume skill-loaded tools, on both maintained release lines.
n8n 2.43 put guardrails, run budgets and resumable executions into the agent loop, and the patches since have tuned and enforced that surface: cacheable builder prompts, a background-warmed skill sandbox, fixed OpenAI-compatible providers and a block on saving workflows with deprecated nodes. The October 12 patches, 2.43.4 and 2.42.7, both fix resuming tool calls for deferred tools that a skill loaded; 2.43.4 also stops Chat Hub segments being handled twice in queue mode, and 2.42.7 keeps concurrent credential tests from sharing one node-type registry.
OpenEMM ships versioned builds on schedule, with no notes on what changed.
OpenEMM moved to its 26.05 line in July with a full frontend and backend GA build. Since then only frontend builds have followed (26.05.111 in September, 26.05.132 in October). Earlier lines (25.11, 25.04) got maintenance releases into December 2025. No entry describes actual changes.

The agent runtime is in a correctness phase: the fixes now target how suspended agent runs pick their tools back up and how chat traffic behaves on scaled-out queue-mode installs. n8n keeps shipping the same core fixes to 2.42 and 2.43 on the same day, so the older line is still being maintained for self-hosters who have not upgraded. Feature additions in this window are small and arrive as patches.
Expect further 2.43.x patches on agent resumption, Chat Hub and queue-mode behaviour; the entries do not show when the 2.42 line stops receiving backports.

The pattern is roughly two feature lines a year, then frontend-only builds and backported maintenance. The direction of the product can't be read from version numbers alone.
Another 26.05 frontend build in the next one to two months fits the cadence; the next major line's timing and content are unclear from the entries.
