A side-by-side editorial comparison of Lemon Squeezy and Shopify — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Lemon Squeezy is closing parity gaps — partial refunds, 2FA, localized checkout — rather than chasing platform-shifting bets.
The recent Lemon Squeezy slate is methodical merchant-of-record polish: localized checkout in 34 languages, refined MRR/ARR charts that distinguish discounted versus undiscounted revenue, manual webhook simulation in test mode, account-wide 2FA, and partial refunds with credit-note generation. The duplicate older entries on the feed are re-emitted versions of the same announcements rather than fresh news.
Shopify is deprecating the manual paths — Liquid receipts, duty-on-delivery — and pushing merchants onto managed defaults.
Two forced migrations landed the same day. Managed Markets stops supporting delivered duty unpaid on August 24, 2026, moving every affected market to DDP so duties are collected at checkout rather than by the carrier; merchants who want the old behaviour must switch Managed Markets off entirely. In POS, a new printed receipt editor consolidates sale, return, exchange, gift and gift card receipts into one branded template with built-in fields for return policy, signature lines and regional tax IDs, and gives Liquid-customized shops until January 1, 2027 to move. Around those, the marketing and analytics surfaces keep widening: Shop Campaigns data is queryable via ShopifyQL, Microsoft Advertising joins Campaign Autopilot, and apps can write annotations onto analytics charts.

Lemon Squeezy is making the table-stakes investments needed for a serious merchant-of-record offering — partial refunds and credit notes, multilingual checkout, and stronger account security — that ought to have been there from launch but weren't. The work signals a maturing posture: instead of chasing flashy new product surfaces, the team is grinding through gaps that block Lemon Squeezy from being adopted in mid-market and international SaaS deals.
Expect more compliance-and-trust features next: SOC 2 references, more granular role-based access for merchant accounts, and additional tax/jurisdiction handling. Webhook tooling will likely expand into delivery monitoring and retry visibility, given the active investment in developer ergonomics. International coverage will continue widening to keep parity with Stripe in MoR positioning.

The pattern is Shopify taking over decisions merchants used to make themselves — how duties are charged, how a receipt template is built, how ad budget is split across channels — and offering configuration where it used to require code. Each of the two migrations comes with a deadline and a default that applies if you do nothing. On the data side the direction is the opposite: Shop Campaigns metrics and app annotations are being pushed out to Triple Whale, Northbeam, Power BI and Looker rather than kept in the admin.
Expect the Liquid-to-editor pattern to repeat on other templated surfaces, since the receipt migration establishes the shape: a shop-level switch, a preview period, and a hard cutover date.
