What is CircleCI?

CircleCI ships an MCP server and auto-rollback deployments, moving well past pure CI.

CircleCI has shipped three directional moves in two weeks: a hosted MCP server that gives AI assistants 24 tools to read and act on pipelines, Smart Deployments with automatic monitoring-triggered rollback, and the Machine Runner Orchestrator reaching GA with multi-resource-class autoscaling. The product is no longer just a CI runner — it now spans self-hosted infrastructure management and post-deploy validation. Cursor Origin integration in beta extends that reach into AI-native development environments.

What is Jaeger?

Jaeger folds its MCP server into the query service and drops Elasticsearch 6

Jaeger's 2.x line is releasing roughly monthly, and two threads dominate. The storage layer is being modernised and pruned — Elasticsearch 6 support removed, rotation and index-cleaner feature gates promoted to beta, ClickHouse gaining TLS and analyzer fixes, configurable max trace duration. The other thread is the query surface: a lightweight trace-summaries endpoint added in 2.19 then given a native Elasticsearch implementation in 2.20, and the MCP extension merged into the query extension.

CircleCI ships an MCP server and auto-rollback deployments, moving well past pure CI.

◆ Current state

CircleCI has shipped three directional moves in two weeks: a hosted MCP server that gives AI assistants 24 tools to read and act on pipelines, Smart Deployments with automatic monitoring-triggered rollback, and the Machine Runner Orchestrator reaching GA with multi-resource-class autoscaling. The product is no longer just a CI runner — it now spans self-hosted infrastructure management and post-deploy validation. Cursor Origin integration in beta extends that reach into AI-native development environments.

◆ Where it's heading

CircleCI is positioning itself as a control plane for the full software delivery lifecycle, not just CI. The MCP server is the clearest signal: the bet is that AI agents will manage CI pipelines, not just execute them. Smart Deployments targets the CD-to-production gap historically owned by separate tooling like Argo and Spinnaker. If both bets compound, CircleCI competes in a substantially broader market than it has historically occupied.

◆ Prediction

The next likely move is expanding MCP tool coverage — particularly config generation and test intelligence — and graduating Cursor Origin from beta to GA. Smart Deployments will likely add more monitoring integrations beyond Datadog and Prometheus, with Honeycomb and Grafana Cloud as obvious candidates.

Jaeger folds its MCP server into the query service and drops Elasticsearch 6

◆ Current state

Jaeger's 2.x line is releasing roughly monthly, and two threads dominate. The storage layer is being modernised and pruned — Elasticsearch 6 support removed, rotation and index-cleaner feature gates promoted to beta, ClickHouse gaining TLS and analyzer fixes, configurable max trace duration. The other thread is the query surface: a lightweight trace-summaries endpoint added in 2.19 then given a native Elasticsearch implementation in 2.20, and the MCP extension merged into the query extension.

◆ Where it's heading

Jaeger is treating machine consumption of traces as a first-class query path rather than an add-on. Merging jaegermcp into jaegerquery means the MCP surface ships wherever query ships, and trace summaries give both the UI and any agent a cheap way to scan results before pulling full traces. On storage, the direction is fewer supported backends maintained better, with ClickHouse steadily gaining parity.

◆ Prediction

Expect the trace-summaries path to become the default for search across storage backends, and further ClickHouse feature work as the Elasticsearch surface is trimmed rather than extended.
