What is ILIAS?

Three supported majors, one security fix, patched in lockstep every month.

ILIAS maintains versions 9, 10 and 11 simultaneously and patches all three on the same day. The August drop (11.3, 10.10, 9.22) and the July drop (11.2, 10.9, 9.21) are identical in shape: a maintenance release per branch, each described only as containing security fixes with the details held behind the project's security blog. Release notes carry no changelog at all, just a pointer and a warning to download the packaged tarball rather than GitHub's auto-generated source archive, which breaks composer.

What is Tutor LMS?

Tutor LMS spent four months getting 4.0 out the door; the interesting bet was buried in a beta.

Tutor LMS ran a long 4.0 release train — alpha in March, four betas, two release candidates, then 4.0.x patches through August. The alpha carried the actual thesis: a learner-first redesign with a mobile-first learning area, thumb-zone navigation, light/dark mode, a Kids Mode, unified Q&A and a redesigned student dashboard. Everything after it was quiz types, monetization plumbing across WooCommerce, EDD and Paid Memberships Pro, theme compatibility, and a long tail of fixes. AI Studio quiz generation appeared once, in beta.4, and has not been mentioned since.

ILIAS vs Tutor LMS: editorial side-by-side

I
ILIAS
EDTECH
5.0

Three supported majors, one security fix, patched in lockstep every month.

◆ Current state

ILIAS maintains versions 9, 10 and 11 simultaneously and patches all three on the same day. The August drop (11.3, 10.10, 9.22) and the July drop (11.2, 10.9, 9.21) are identical in shape: a maintenance release per branch, each described only as containing security fixes with the details held behind the project's security blog. Release notes carry no changelog at all, just a pointer and a warning to download the packaged tarball rather than GitHub's auto-generated source archive, which breaks composer.

◆ Where it's heading

The pattern is a disciplined coordinated-disclosure cadence rather than a development roadmap — roughly monthly, all branches together, no feature content in the feed. Keeping three majors on the same patch schedule tells you the installed base is spread across all of them, which is what you would expect from self-hosted university deployments that upgrade on academic-year boundaries. Nothing observable here indicates what version 12 might contain.

◆ Prediction

Expect the next coordinated triple in roughly a month, again with the substance published on the security blog rather than in the release notes.

5.0

Tutor LMS spent four months getting 4.0 out the door; the interesting bet was buried in a beta.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

The product is competing on the learner experience rather than the instructor toolchain, which is a different position from most WordPress LMS plugins that sell on course-builder features. The heavy investment in quiz variety — Draw Image, Pin Image, Scale, Graph, Puzzle, Ordering — plus accessibility and GDPR support points at institutional and K-12 buyers rather than solo course sellers. Now that 4.0 is stable, the patch releases have thinned to four-line fix lists, which usually means the next feature branch is being cut.

◆ Prediction

Expect the next minor to pick up AI Studio, since quiz question generation shipped as a single Pro line in beta.4 and never got a follow-up despite the quiz engine being where most 4.0 effort went. Continued monetization-gateway fixes are likely either way — every release in the window touched at least one of WooCommerce, EDD or PMPro.
