Computer science education platform for K-12 students

Code.org is repainting the whole platform while quietly hardening student account handling

Current state
Code.org ships to production most weekdays, and nearly every deploy carries part of a large rebrand: a new design system (codeai-next / CADS) being applied component by component across dialogs, buttons, chips, toggles and lab surfaces. Running underneath it is a second, less visible track of account work — deletion with education-record safeguards, parent and guardian email capture, and account actions in settings.
Where it's heading
The rebrand crossed from opt-in to default this fortnight, which usually means the remaining work is cleanup rather than migration. The account and moderation changes suggest the more consequential direction: Code.org is tightening how student data and user-generated content are handled, adding backend moderation to Sketch Lab and safeguards around teacher-held education records.
Prediction
Expect the per-component rebrand commits to taper as codeai-next becomes the only brand, with the account, moderation and challenge-evaluation work continuing to grow.

Aug 5 deploy: challenge evaluation foundations, ActiveJob backend

A deploy adding challenge evaluation model foundations and an ActiveJob backend workload on Kubernetes — early scaffolding for automated assessment rather than anything students see yet. The rest is regional notice cleanup and test repair.

Aug 4 deploy: share/remix in Sketch Lab, CI sharding

Share and remix arrives in Sketch Lab, extending the social loop that already exists in the older labs. The rest of the deploy is rebrand work, dependency bumps and sharding the Playwright suite across four runners.

Aug 3 deploy: codeai-next becomes the default brand

    ⚡ SPARK

The deploy that flips the default brand fallback from codeai to codeai-next, turning months of per-component styling work into what every user sees by default. It also lands account deletion with safeguards for teacher-held education records.

Jul 31 deploy: Sketch Lab image moderation, rebrand migrations

Backend moderation for Sketch Lab image uploads lands here, alongside dialog and button migrations to the new design system and colour sync from Figma. Moderation on a drawing tool aimed at classrooms is the substantive part.

Jul 30 deploy: Account Actions in settings

Adds an Account Actions section covering account type and sign-out, plus a thin backend Docker runtime image. Continues the pattern of account self-service arriving in small increments between rebrand commits.

Jul 29 deploy: parent/guardian email on accounts

A parent/guardian email section is added to accounts — the kind of field that exists to support consent and notification flows for under-age users. The remainder is Sketch Lab text handling and accessibility-scanned end-to-end tests.
