A side-by-side editorial comparison of ILIAS and Processing — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
ILIAS keeps three major versions patched on the same day, month after month
ILIAS released 11.5, 10.12 and 9.24 together on 6 October, each carrying security fixes and an update recommendation. This matches the August and September batches, with details held in the project's security blog rather than the release notes. Institutions on older major versions continue to get coverage alongside the latest line.
Processing adds a release-candidate step before shipping 4.5.7's Linux and WebGPU fixes.
Processing restarted its release train in June with 4.5.4 and has shipped steadily since. 4.5.6 in July merged the wgpu renderer branch and moved the build to Gradle 9. 4.5.7 in September went through two release candidates first, a step none of the earlier releases in this feed had, and fixed an InaccessibleObjectException at Linux startup, limited the --disable-awt flag to the WebGPU renderer, and set up Maven publishing for app/utils.

ILIAS remains in a stability cadence built for universities and enterprises with slow upgrade cycles. The releases are predictable and intentionally thin, so feature development is not visible in this feed at all. Every recent batch has contained security fixes, which makes monthly updating the operational expectation for administrators.
Expect the next coordinated batch across 11, 10 and 9 in about a month, again with security fixes. Any major feature news would more likely appear through the docu.ilias.de community process than in these releases.

The project is putting process around its releases (CI permission checks, a candidate stage before full release) while the WebGPU renderer settles in. Fixes in 4.5.7 that target the WebGPU path show the new renderer is now getting real-world use.
Expect further 4.5.x releases through the same candidate process, with WebGPU renderer fixes as the main content.
