The last release was 0.3.3 in January 2021, a revert of accidental vectorisation introduced four days earlier. The only substantive change in the package's visible history is 0.3.2 teaching user_data_dir(), use_cache_dir() and use_config_dir() to respect the R_USER_DATA_DIR, R_USER_CACHE_DIR and R_USER_CONFIG_DIR environment variables.

The direction is a Copilot that behaves like an operating layer rather than an IDE add-on: one plugin built once and run across VS Code, the CLI, the standalone app, and rival clients. Alongside that, GitHub keeps converting legacy policy primitives into the rulesets framework and giving admins dashboards and token-level cost breakdowns to govern it. Model churn continues underneath, with MAI-Code-1.1-Flash arriving and its predecessor already dated for removal.

Expect the Agent Plugins interface to pick up a discovery or registry surface and enterprise allowlisting, following the same path MCP took from availability to managed settings. The branch protection migration tool points to a deprecation date for the old rules once adoption is measurable.

A port of a Python utility with no open direction, four releases in eleven years, and a dependency position underneath a large share of CRAN packages that need a cache directory.
