GeoServer cut 3.0.0 in June after maintaining 2.27.x and 2.28.x in parallel through the first half of the year. The major release is structural rather than feature-led: KML, WCS 1.0 and 1.1 move out to extensions, arcgrid and worldimage become plugins, WMS 1.1 and 1.3 are split, WMS is made independent of WFS, and H2 is removed from the product and the test suite entirely. New data paths arrive as community modules — a DuckDB datastore and single-file GeoParquet upload via REST — and OIDC is promoted from community module to supported extension.

What is Node.js?

Three release lines moving in lockstep, with the security train setting the pace.

Node is maintaining three lines at once — 26.x Current, 24.x 'Krypton' LTS and 22.x 'Jod' LTS — and the window is dominated by a single coordinated security release on 29 July that shipped the same eleven CVEs to all three branches simultaneously. Three of those were rated High, and three of the eleven were in the permission model itself. Feature work continues on Current at roughly a two-week minor cadence, with 24.x absorbing the backports in large batches.

◆ Current state

GeoServer cut 3.0.0 in June after maintaining 2.27.x and 2.28.x in parallel through the first half of the year. ◆ Where it's heading

Two directions are legible. The core is being reduced to what every deployment needs, with everything else pushed to extensions and plugins, which is the standard fix for a server that has accumulated two decades of optional protocol support. Separately, the OGC API surface is where the ongoing functional work is: Processes gained envelope inputs, multiple raw responses, pagination, correct incomplete-execution errors and an Echo process across these releases, while the older WFS/WMS work is mostly bug fixing. The 2.28.x line continues to receive the same fixes, so the branches have not diverged in behaviour yet.

◆ Prediction

Expect the DuckDB and GeoParquet modules to be the ones promoted next, following the path OIDC just took from community to extension, and expect 3.0.x to spend its early point releases on fallout from the H2 removal and the extension split. Continued OGC API Processes work is the safest bet in the functional roadmap.

◆ Where it's heading

Two things are visible across these releases. The crypto layer is being systematically rebuilt — OpenSSL 3, BoringSSL and legacy backends were split apart, FIPS handling for Argon2 was corrected, and key loading is moving to OpenSSL STORE loaders — which reads as preparation for supporting more than one TLS backend cleanly. Separately, the permission model has stopped being a side experiment and is now generating its own CVEs, which is what happens when a security feature starts being relied on. Observability is the third thread, with Perfetto being wired into the build and event-loop delay sampling moving per-iteration.

◆ Prediction

Expect the crypto backend split to keep producing SEMVER-MINOR changes on Current as key handling migrates to STORE loaders, and expect the next 24.x LTS drop to be another large batch backport rather than a steady drip. Given three permission-model CVEs in one train, further hardening there is the most likely source of the next security release.
