Node is maintaining three lines at once — 26.x Current, 24.x 'Krypton' LTS and 22.x 'Jod' LTS — and the window is dominated by a single coordinated security release on 29 July that shipped the same eleven CVEs to all three branches simultaneously. ESP-IDF maintains at least five branches concurrently — 5.2, 5.4, 5.5, 6.0 and now a 6.1 beta — with patch releases arriving across them every few weeks. The release entries themselves are mostly installation instructions, and the substantive changelog is deferred to Espressif's separate release notes database. Where detail does surface it is narrow and specific: v5.5.5 introduced CONFIG_SPIRAM_ENC_EXEMPT with a MALLOC_CAP_SPIRAM_NO_ENC capability for carving an unencrypted PSRAM region, and v5.2.7 changed OpenThread examples to require an ot prefix on CLI commands.

Two things are visible across these releases. The crypto layer is being systematically rebuilt — OpenSSL 3, BoringSSL and legacy backends were split apart, FIPS handling for Argon2 was corrected, and key loading is moving to OpenSSL STORE loaders — which reads as preparation for supporting more than one TLS backend cleanly. Separately, the permission model has stopped being a side experiment and is now generating its own CVEs, which is what happens when a security feature starts being relied on. Observability is the third thread, with Perfetto being wired into the build and event-loop delay sampling moving per-iteration.
Expect the crypto backend split to keep producing SEMVER-MINOR changes on Current as key handling migrates to STORE loaders, and expect the next 24.x LTS drop to be another large batch backport rather than a steady drip. Given three permission-model CVEs in one train, further hardening there is the most likely source of the next security release.

The branch count is the product decision here: hardware shipped years ago stays supported, so the 5.2 line still receives breaking changes to its examples while 6.1 goes to beta. That serves manufacturers with long product lifecycles, at the cost of release notes that carry little signal on their own. The 6.1 beta is described as mostly compatible with 6.0 apps, which places it as an incremental step rather than the next major break.
Expect a 6.1 release candidate to follow the beta while patch releases continue across the 5.x lines on the current cadence.
