A side-by-side editorial comparison of Eclipse Che and Grav — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Eclipse Che pulls workspaces into chectl and adds Orca, an editor for AI coding agents.
Eclipse Che returned to detailed release notes after two sparse months. Che 7.123 added OpenShift on IBM Z and ARM, an editor change on existing workspaces and automatic OAuth token refresh, alongside DevWorkspace Operator 1.0.0. Che 7.124 built a workspace command group into chectl, replacing the separate connector tool, and added Orca as an editor option. DevWorkspace Operator 1.0.0 adds optional per-workspace NetworkPolicy provisioning.
Grav's 1.7 line takes three patches in four hours, hardening every bundled web-server config.
Grav's 1.7 branch shipped three patches between 10-31 and 11-01. 1.7.53.7 backports five Grav 2.2.18 security fixes found by Anthropic's OSS Scanner, covering image conversion, cached cookie responses and media metadata. 1.7.53.8 brings the Grav 2 protection rules to the bundled Apache, IIS, nginx, Caddy and lighttpd configs plus the php -S router. 1.7.53.9 stops the :80 redirect on sites behind an HTTPS-terminating proxy.

The consistent theme of removing manual steps continues, now reaching developers as well as operators. Editors can change without recreating a workspace, tokens renew without a restart, and SSH connection needs no extra tool. Multi-architecture support widens where Che runs, and Orca suggests AI coding agents are becoming a standard workspace option rather than an add-on.
Expect more AI agent tooling in the editor list and further chectl workspace commands. Monthly releases should continue, though 7.121 and 7.122 show that detailed notes are not guaranteed.

Security work lands on Grav 2 first and is then carried back to 1.7, and the pace of that carry-back jumped: one patch on 10-24, three within about four hours. The fixes moved from individual code paths to the web-server rules that sit in front of the application. Among web servers, only Apache sites get those rules on upgrade; IIS, nginx, Caddy and lighttpd sites must copy them by hand, so protection on 1.7 now depends on the host's web server.
Expect more 1.7.53.x patches mirroring 2.x security fixes, plus small follow-up fixes like the proxy redirect in 1.7.53.9. The entries don't show how long 1.7 support continues.
