Vitess tightens what it accepts: sql_mode checks and CRL enforcement reach both release lines.

◆Current state
Vitess keeps v23 and v24 in step with same-day patch releases, and October's are behaviour changes rather than cleanup. v24.0.5 and v23.0.8 replace a bypassable textual check with MySQL 8 sql_mode semantics, so VTGate and VTTablet reject unsupported modes even when the backend already runs them. v24.0.4 and v23.0.7 moved lz4 backups to a new library, fixing broken block decoding on amd64, and began enforcing configured CRLs in every SSL mode.
◆Where it's heading
Patch releases are carrying real compatibility risk: clients that set ANSI or IGNORE_SPACE now get errors, --compression-level means something different for lz4, and some TLS connections that used to pass are refused. The common thread is closing gaps between what configuration promised and what Vitess enforced.
◆Prediction
Expect more enforcement-style fixes in v23 and v24 patches, each with rollout notes like this round's warning about VTTablets being upgraded before VTGates. Nothing in these entries describes the next major line.

    v24.0.5: VTGate and VTTablet reject unsupported sql_mode values

    A patch that changes behaviour: unsupported modes are rejected even when MySQL already runs them, and Vitess connections stop inheriting modes that alter how SQL text is read. Clients setting ANSI or IGNORE_SPACE will now see errors.

    v24.0.4: new lz4 library, CRLs enforced in every SSL mode

    The lz4 engine moves to a library that fixes broken amd64 block decoding, and --compression-level changes meaning with it. Configured CRLs are now enforced in every SSL mode, which refuses some connections that previously passed.
