What is Dragonfly?

Dragonfly speeds up slot lookups on 2.0 as its cluster-mode fixes keep coming.

Dragonfly maintains two incremental lines, 1.40 and 2.0, with small targeted releases. The 2.0 line has fixed dropped writes during slot migration and moved experimental slot-based sharding to Fibonacci hashing. i2.0.6 on October 30 makes GetSlotInfo faster, another cluster-mode refinement.

What is Skipper?

Skipper now serves zone-filtered routes only when its own ingress is balanced across zones.

Skipper, Zalando's HTTP router and Kubernetes ingress, tags a release for nearly every merge, so most entries are dependency bumps. The substantive ones this autumn are about zone-aware routing: v0.28.56 made routesrv recompress only zones whose routes changed, and v0.28.60 on November 2 serves zone-filtered routes only when skipper-ingress is balanced across zones, falling back to the global table otherwise.

Dragonfly
INFRA · APIS
5.0

Dragonfly speeds up slot lookups on 2.0 as its cluster-mode fixes keep coming.

◆ Current state

Dragonfly maintains two incremental lines, 1.40 and 2.0, with small targeted releases. The 2.0 line has fixed dropped writes during slot migration and moved experimental slot-based sharding to Fibonacci hashing. i2.0.6 on October 30 makes GetSlotInfo faster, another cluster-mode refinement.

◆ Where it's heading

The 2.0 line is maturing through cluster and migration work, while 1.40 gets targeted performance backports. Release cadence has slowed from paired weekly builds to occasional single fixes.

◆ Prediction

Expect further 2.0.x builds focused on cluster mode and slot migration; whether scope-based memory tracking gets switched on is still unclear.

5.0

◆ Current state

Skipper, Zalando's HTTP router and Kubernetes ingress, tags a release for nearly every merge, so most entries are dependency bumps. ◆ Where it's heading

Zone-aware routing is being made safe for production, with guards against skew and fixes for a data race and silent misconfiguration. It currently works only in the routesrv mode, and the release notes say the direct Kubernetes mode needs the same filtering.

◆ Prediction

Expect zone filtering to be extended to the skipper-to-Kubernetes mode in a coming tag, as the v0.28.60 notes say is needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Dragonfly and Skipper?

Both compete on the same themes — performance — within Infra & APIs. Dragonfly and Skipper are shipping at a similar cadence (velocity 5.0 vs 5.0, both within Sparkpulse's "active" band). See the at-a-glance table above for a side-by-side breakdown of velocity, recent sparks, and editorial themes.

Is Dragonfly better than Skipper?

Sparkpulse doesn't pick a winner — we score release velocity, not feature parity. Dragonfly and Skipper are shipping at a similar cadence (velocity 5.0 vs 5.0, both within Sparkpulse's "active" band).
