A side-by-side editorial comparison of Datawrapper and OpenHouse — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Datawrapper lets locator maps use your own icons, then keeps fixing small chart behaviours.
Datawrapper's changelog remains a stream of small, dated changes to individual chart types. The largest recent item lets locator-map authors pick from a larger icon set or upload their own marker icons, with backgrounds or outlines to separate them from the map. Around it sit fixes for custom month ticks, archive search surviving a re-sort, row highlighting in arrow and dot plots, and a batch of new boundary maps for Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil and US ZIP areas.
OpenHouse records why table maintenance fails and adds timezone-aware retention.
OpenHouse landed Views M1 on October 30, with create, replace, list and delete over its commit-only engine behind database-scoped gating. On November 3 it shipped two operational changes: the Optimizer now stores a failure reason for each failed maintenance operation, and retention policies on string-date columns can use a timezone instead of UTC.

The work is spread across chart types rather than concentrated on one bet: maps get the most attention, with icon customization, dark-mode zoom controls and monthly boundary additions. Expect the same cadence of per-chart refinements, with maps continuing to receive the visible upgrades.
More map customization is the likeliest next step, following custom icons with further marker or label styling options; the entries give no sign of a new chart type.

Feature series run in parallel: views, column defaults, and now table maintenance operations. The failure-reason work is framed as groundwork for dashboards and transient-versus-permanent classification. Retention timezone support is split across a backend PR and a Spark 3.5 SQL PR, the same stacked pattern used elsewhere.
Expect the Spark SQL half of retention timezones (#735) and further Optimizer failure-visibility work, likely failure classification.
