Chromatic vs Tolgee: at a glance
What is Chromatic?
Chromatic now routes visual reviews to component owners automatically.
Chromatic's October update assigns reviewers automatically from component ownership, merges libraries into one Library view and turns on usage alerts by default. It follows September's flaky-test quarantine and the launch of Chromatic for Vitest Browser Mode.
What is Tolgee?
Tolgee ships four patch releases in a day, mostly security bumps and branching fixes.
Tolgee released 3.239.1 through 3.240.3 between October 24 and 26: eMudhra roots removed from the Java trust store, Spring Boot and Hibernate security bumps, faster branch creation, Slack integration fixes, and a usage estimate that now includes one-time upgrade proration. Just before, 3.238.0 reverted per-organization plan feature grants.
Chromatic vs Tolgee: editorial side-by-side
Chromatic
5.0INFRA · APIS
Chromatic now routes visual reviews to component owners automatically.
◆ Current state
Chromatic's October update assigns reviewers automatically from component ownership, merges libraries into one Library view and turns on usage alerts by default. It follows September's flaky-test quarantine and the launch of Chromatic for Vitest Browser Mode.
◆ Where it's heading
Chromatic spent most of the year making its visual test signal trustworthy (flake tracing, filtering, quarantine) and widening entry points beyond Storybook to Vitest and React Native. The October release moves to review workflow and spend controls for larger teams.
◆ Prediction
Expect React Native visual testing to move past preview, and more review-routing and ownership features for large design systems.
Tolgee
5.0INFRA · APIS
Tolgee ships four patch releases in a day, mostly security bumps and branching fixes.
◆ Current state
Tolgee released 3.239.1 through 3.240.3 between October 24 and 26: eMudhra roots removed from the Java trust store, Spring Boot and Hibernate security bumps, faster branch creation, Slack integration fixes, and a usage estimate that now includes one-time upgrade proration. Just before, 3.238.0 reverted per-organization plan feature grants.
◆ Where it's heading
Tolgee ships from main almost daily. The visible themes are billing accuracy (proration, plural machine translation billing, the reverted feature grants), branching performance, and quick upstream security updates.
◆ Prediction
Expect the per-organization feature grants to return in a reworked form, alongside more billing and branching fixes.
