What is ambient?

A 2020 tidy-API rewrite that ambient has been coasting on ever since.

ambient generates Perlin, simplex, worley and related noise fields for R, wrapping the FastNoise C++ library. Its shape was set by the 1.0.0 tidy-interface rewrite in December 2020; the two releases since have been a blue-noise addition and a one-line overflow fix. Nothing has shipped in the visible window since September 2022.

What is ComfyUI?

ComfyUI ships day-0 support for nearly every new video model, and is now selling the runtime around it.

The changelog is a near-weekly cadence of model arrivals: LTX-2.5, Wan Animate 2, Seedance 2.5, FLUX 3, MiniMax H3, Seedream 5.0 Pro. Some land as native day-0 support with local execution, others as Partner Nodes calling a hosted API. Around that, ComfyUI has started shipping products of its own: Comfy MCP for agent access and Comfy For Teams for shared infrastructure.

DESIGN
0.0

A 2020 tidy-API rewrite that ambient has been coasting on ever since.

◆ Current state

ambient generates Perlin, simplex, worley and related noise fields for R, wrapping the FastNoise C++ library. Its shape was set by the 1.0.0 tidy-interface rewrite in December 2020; the two releases since have been a blue-noise addition and a one-line overflow fix. Nothing has shipped in the visible window since September 2022.

◆ Where it's heading

The arc is complete-then-quiet: a large API redesign, a short consolidation tail, then silence. The cpp11 migration in 1.0.1 reads as the maintainer clearing CRAN-side obligations rather than opening new work. On the evidence here the package is in maintenance, not development.

◆ Prediction

The entries give no signal of planned work; the most likely next release is another compatibility or CRAN-compliance patch rather than new generators.

ComfyUI
DESIGN
6.3

ComfyUI ships day-0 support for nearly every new video model, and is now selling the runtime around it.

◆ Current state

The changelog is a near-weekly cadence of model arrivals: LTX-2.5, Wan Animate 2, Seedance 2.5, FLUX 3, MiniMax H3, Seedream 5.0 Pro. Some land as native day-0 support with local execution, others as Partner Nodes calling a hosted API. Around that, ComfyUI has started shipping products of its own: Comfy MCP for agent access and Comfy For Teams for shared infrastructure.

◆ Where it's heading

Model integration is no longer the differentiator here, it is the baseline the project maintains. The interesting movement is that ComfyUI is monetizing the layer underneath: team deployments, agent-facing MCP access, and an education partnership. The graph editor is becoming the neutral runtime every model vendor wants to launch into, with commercial surfaces attached.

◆ Prediction

The split between native day-0 support and Partner Nodes tracks whether weights are open, so expect the next closed model to arrive as a Partner Node and the next open-weights release to get local optimization notes.
