Ably is shipping simultaneously across infrastructure SDKs and AI-specific capabilities. LiveObjects — a real-time state sync layer for nested maps and counters — graduated from experimental to production-stable in the Java and Cocoa SDKs this month, with path-based access and resilient subscriptions that survive underlying object replacement. The AI Transport SDK gained Temporal durable-workflow support and OpenAI Responses API streaming. On the infrastructure side, the .NET SDK reduces reconnect latency from 120s to ~25s and the Terraform provider got a major maturity pass with moderation rules and a config importer.

The 0.38 patch line keeps shipping small releases with real features in them. v0.38.27 drops the local-image requirement for k3s deploys, reports Traefik DNS-provider variables as global keys, adds storage directory mode and removal flags, and introduces a vector-cron-sink so scheduled cron output has somewhere to go. It follows v0.38.26, which brought wildcard domains, custom cert issuers, and kernel sysctls to the k3s scheduler.

The direction is Ably as AI agent infrastructure. LiveObjects' own documentation positions it explicitly for 'AI agents, live configurations, and collaborative experiences.' The AI Transport SDK is a purpose-built layer for agentic workflows — durable sessions, multi-turn conversations, tool execution — layered on Ably's realtime primitives. This is a deliberate expansion from realtime messaging platform into the transport layer that agents run on.
The AI Transport SDK will add more model provider codecs — the OpenAI Responses integration suggests Anthropic or Gemini support is next. LiveObjects needs to reach stable across remaining SDKs (Python, .NET) before the feature can be adopted uniformly.

Two threads run through almost every release: closing the gap between the k3s scheduler and the classic single-host path, and making every command machine-readable. The k3s work has moved from basic scheduling to the operational details — certificates, DNS, sysctls, and now deploys that no longer assume a local Docker image — which is the sequence a project follows when it expects the Kubernetes path to become the default rather than the alternative.
Expect the remaining k3s parity gaps to keep closing one release at a time, and expect the logging work started with vector-cron-sink to extend to other task types that currently have no sink.
