Finance tooling spent the week on release discipline, with InvoiceShelf's MCP server the only agent-facing move.
The week in finance
Four finance products shipped this week, and three of them were about operating many customers on one install. InvoiceShelf moved its 3.0 alphas toward managed hosting, Kill Bill kept pushing per-tenant invoice presentation, and Shift4 ran its staged venue rollout to completion.
The one move aimed at software agents rather than people was InvoiceShelf's MCP server. Everything else was incremental, which is typical for a sector where the buyer rewards predictability over novelty.
Leaders
InvoiceShelf shipped the week's only spark: 3.0 alpha.5 adds an MCP server so Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and Cursor can read, draft and send invoices and estimates with the connecting user's permissions. Later alphas added role presets and user administration for the super admin, and let owners install signed modules on managed hosts. It is still marked not for production, so this is direction, not availability.
Shift4 took Q3-R3 to all venues on 30 September and issued its first global patch, POS v2.65.4, on 8 October. The more interesting line is in Customer Hub w41, where Payment Links extend to Opera, a feature that first led the w35 build.
Kill Bill shipped 0.24.22 with partial locales for invoice and catalog translations, so a tenant can localise only the strings it needs. It follows the shared-branding refactor in 0.24.20, and a revert in 0.24.21 shows the branding work is still being tuned.
Wildcards
Firefly III is the outlier: its feed is automated develop pre-releases with boilerplate notes and no changelog. Cadence has slowed from four builds a day to one or two, but nothing in the feed says what changed, so there is nothing to read into it beyond continued activity.
Themes that compounded
- Three of four products invested in multi-tenant or multi-venue operation: role presets, tenant branding, staged venue bundles.
- Customisation is moving down to the tenant level, from locales in Kill Bill to company-wide role presets in InvoiceShelf.
- Staged rollouts are becoming visible product surface in Shift4, with a patch after each global bundle now part of the cycle.
Watch this week
Watch whether InvoiceShelf keeps its several-alphas-a-week pace and whether the MCP server gets permission or audit controls in later alphas, since it sends documents under a user's identity. At Shift4, the next Customer Hub weekly build will show whether Payment Links keep extending to more systems.
