◆Current state
The 3.x line is now centered on LLM tracing and evaluation rather than classic experiment tracking. 3.16 rebuilt the trace explorer, added span links, and let the MLflow Assistant generate custom trace views from a plain-English prompt; 3.17 added typed judge feedback, fine-grained permissions with explicit DENY, and a schema migration that rules out mixed-version rolling upgrades. Security defaults tightened across both: basic-auth now fails closed and the shipped default admin password is gone.
◆Where it's heading
Two threads run through these releases: making traces the primary workspace for GenAI teams, and hardening the server for multi-user, shared deployments (per-user budgets, scoped assistant sessions, resource-level access control). The legacy 2.11 line still gets Databricks-specific patches, so the old tracking user base hasn't been dropped.
◆Prediction
The next minor will likely extend the assistant beyond view-building into more of the trace and evaluation workflow, alongside more access-control work for shared servers.

    MLflow 3.17.0

    3.17 adds typed Boolean and categorical judge feedback, resource-level permissions with wildcard grants and explicit DENY, and opt-in daily rollups for trace analytics. It continues the shared-server hardening from 3.16, but it brings a mandatory schema upgrade with every writer stopped.

    Mostly fixes, plus a security-relevant breaking change: the default basic-auth admin password is no longer shipped. Scorer timeouts and Unity Catalog span links extend the 3.16 tracing work.
