Open-source 2D and 3D game engine

Godot runs two stable branches at once, and its release notes tell you almost nothing.

Current state
Godot's release feed alternates feature releases (4.5, 4.6, 4.7) with a steady drip of maintenance point releases, and it maintains the previous minor in parallel — 4.6.2 and 4.6.3 both shipped five days after 4.7 went stable. The notes themselves carry no substance: every entry is the same boilerplate paragraph plus links to an off-feed changelog, so the only signal available here is the version number and the release type. Cadence is roughly monthly with clusters around a feature release.
Where it's heading
The pattern is a mature, predictable train: a feature release about every four to five months, backported fixes to the prior branch for a couple of months after, and no 5.x signal anywhere in the window. The 3.6 branch is still getting occasional maintenance builds, so the pre-4.x line has not been fully retired. Nothing about the shape of releases has changed across the last year of entries.
Prediction
Expect another 4.7.x maintenance release within weeks and 4.6 backports to taper off as 4.7 adoption grows. What actually lands in each release cannot be predicted from this feed — the notes never say.

Recent moves

    Godot 4.7.1 maintenance release

The first patch on the 4.7 line, four weeks after 4.7 went stable. The notes carry only the standard maintenance boilerplate — bug and stability fixes, compatible with previous releases — with the actual changelog hosted off-feed.

    Godot 4.6.3 maintenance release

A 4.6-branch patch shipped the same day as 4.6.2, five days after 4.7 became the current feature release. Evidence that the previous minor keeps getting fixes rather than being cut loose at the branch point.

    Godot 4.6.2 maintenance release

A same-day companion to 4.6.3 on the older stable branch. Boilerplate maintenance notes with no user-visible detail in the feed.

    Godot 4.7 feature release

The current feature release, landing about five months after 4.6 and holding compatibility with it. It anchors the branch that 4.7.1 then patched, but the entry describes it only as improving usability and performance — the substance lives in an off-feed changelog.

    Godot 4.6.1 maintenance release

The first patch on the 4.6 line, two months after 4.6 shipped. Standard maintenance boilerplate.

    Godot 4.5.2 maintenance release

A late patch to the 4.5 branch, shipped while 4.6 was already the current release. Same boilerplate; useful only as a marker of how long Godot keeps an older minor alive.
