What is OpenWrt?

OpenWrt's releases are still set by security fixes, now mostly on the 25.12 branch.

OpenWrt 25.12 is the active stable series, and its sixth service release on October 19 fixed several remotely triggerable flaws in network services that are enabled by default. Nearly every release since March has been vulnerability response, from the Trail of Bits audit CVEs to odhcpd's DHCPv6 overflow and the dnsmasq backports. The 24.10 branch's last entry is 24.10.8 in July.

What is Sonic?

Sonic yanks two releases in a day, then ships faster ingest and new count commands.

Sonic is a lightweight Rust search index that gained BM25 ranking in 1.8. On September 21 it released 1.9.0 with large PUSH performance gains and 1.9.1, then yanked both over two serious bugs and shipped 1.10.0 the same day with new COUNTC, COUNTB and COUNTO commands replacing COUNT. 1.10.1 fixed a CJK tokenizer panic on Chinese text and object counting, and 1.10.2 repaired backups.

2.5

OpenWrt's releases are still set by security fixes, now mostly on the 25.12 branch.

◆ Current state

OpenWrt 25.12 is the active stable series, and its sixth service release on October 19 fixed several remotely triggerable flaws in network services that are enabled by default. Nearly every release since March has been vulnerability response, from the Trail of Bits audit CVEs to odhcpd's DHCPv6 overflow and the dnsmasq backports. The 24.10 branch's last entry is 24.10.8 in July.

◆ Where it's heading

Releases are driven by disclosures in default services such as odhcpd and dnsmasq, with device support added on the side. 24.10 appears to be winding down, which leaves 25.12 as the only line getting fixes.

◆ Prediction

Expect a 25.12.7 when the next default-service CVE batch lands; whether 24.10 gets any further release is unclear from the feed.

Sonic yanks two releases in a day, then ships faster ingest and new count commands.

◆ Current state

Sonic is a lightweight Rust search index that gained BM25 ranking in 1.8. On September 21 it released 1.9.0 with large PUSH performance gains and 1.9.1, then yanked both over two serious bugs and shipped 1.10.0 the same day with new COUNTC, COUNTB and COUNTO commands replacing COUNT. 1.10.1 fixed a CJK tokenizer panic on Chinese text and object counting, and 1.10.2 repaired backups.

◆ Where it's heading

The 1.x line is moving fast on ingest performance and correctness for high-scale and non-English users, at the cost of some unstable releases. Experimental APIs are being tested in production before they reach official builds.

◆ Prediction

Expect the experimental high-scale PUSH features to graduate out of the feature flag in a later 1.x; when is unclear.
