What is Nacos?

Nacos is turning a microservice registry into a registry for AI agents.

Nacos maintains three lines at once: 2.x on a JDK 8 baseline for legacy deployments, 3.2.x as the current stable series, and a 3.3.0 beta carrying the new work. The 3.x line has absorbed an AI Registry that now covers MCP servers, Skills, Prompts and Agents, with a rebuilt console to manage them. The 3.3.0 beta adds protocol-neutral agent registration with endpoint discovery and Java SDKs, hybrid keyword-plus-vector discovery for AI resources, and a first phase of distributed locks.

The engine is being repositioned as a host for physics it does not implement itself. PythonForce, the OpenFF internal changes, TinkerFiles and the constant-pH groundwork all point the same way: OpenMM supplies the integrator, the GPU kernels and the force-field plumbing, and lets external ecosystems supply the model. The second thread is unglamorous and consistent — every release moves more of the simulation loop off the CPU, from the HIP platform in 8.2 to the minimizer rewrite in 8.5.

Constant pH is described as living in a separate repository with only its prerequisites merged, so the obvious next step is folding that implementation into the main release. Expect the patch-release pattern to continue as well: 8.5.0 and 8.4.0 each drew fixes within weeks, most of them in barostats and force initialization.

Nacos is applying the primitives it already owned — registration, discovery, config, namespacing, authorization — to a new class of registrable thing. Agents and skills get lifecycle management, versioning and visibility rules the same way services and config always did. The 2.x line is being kept strictly to security and stability backports, which marks 3.x as the only place direction changes.

The distributed lock work is explicitly phase one, so a second phase with broader lock semantics is the likely next beta; agent registration should reach general availability in a 3.3.0 release.
