A side-by-side editorial comparison of Grype and Scalar — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Grype keeps tightening match accuracy while making its database diff tool usable at scale
Grype's autumn releases stay on matching accuracy: AlmaLinux fix dates and Swift advisories in v0.121.0, SLES coverage and NVD SSVC data in v0.120.0, and --show-suppressed for distro-fixed matches in v0.119.0. The v0.121.1 patch fixed OpenVEX constraints for versionless purls and reworked db diff, and v0.121.2 makes db search results ordered deterministically and moves to Syft 1.57.0.
Scalar's November 5 releases give each API document its own authentication settings
Scalar ships several package lines on separate version tracks. The November 5 API reference releases (1.77.0 and the ASP.NET Core 1.1.47) let each document carry its own authentication defaults, render specification extensions, and make search much faster on interconnected schemas. The mock server gained an onResponse hook and spec-correct path matching, and the API client hardened its CORS proxy against XSS and open redirects. The SDK generator now emits experimental signed-URL methods across ten languages and sends only the credentials each operation requires.

Accuracy work is spreading from the matcher into the tooling around the vulnerability database, with db diff now reporting fix-date, version-range and added/removed changes precisely. That suggests Anchore wants users to audit what changes between database builds, not just trust the scan result.
The next minor likely brings more distro-specific fix data and further db diff output options; the entries do not show a new matcher feature in progress.

The reference renderer is in a polish phase after October's localhost toolbar and hosting waitlist, while the SDK generator is where breadth is growing fastest. Signed URLs, idempotency keys and per-operation credentials show Scalar chasing parity with dedicated SDK vendors across many languages.
The hosting waitlist has gone quiet in these notes; the clearest near-term pattern is signed-URL methods leaving experimental status and reaching the remaining SDK targets.
