A side-by-side editorial comparison of Recall and Mixedbread — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Recall widens what enters the library: EPUB books, image sets and 1,000-link CSV imports.
September brought large intake additions: EPUB books become cards you can read, search and chat with, several photos can form one card, text inside social-post images is read, and a CSV import takes up to 1,000 links at a time from Raindrop, Instapaper or a spreadsheet. Chat answers can now be saved to a new or existing card. The 9 October release turned to a faster home page for large libraries and fuller saves from LinkedIn, Reddit, X and Threads.
Mixedbread ships weekly around Stores and Toast 1, turning retrieval into a full agent backend.
Mixedbread's changelog has gone from sparse to near-weekly. The product now centers on Stores, its search layer, and Toast 1, a deep-search model with MCP tools, hosted search tools and context management. Recent releases add speaker labels for audio and video, download links in search results, monthly budgets, store copies, and a Zero Data Retention attestation for bring-your-own-bucket customers.

The input side keeps widening, with books the largest new source and CSV import aimed at people arriving from read-it-later tools. As libraries grow, the work shifts toward keeping them fast and saves complete, which is most of October's release. Chat output flowing back into cards turns answers into library content.
Expect more performance and capture fixes as bulk import raises library sizes. Video is the most visible gap, since the September notes say OCR on social posts doesn't cover it yet.

The arc has moved from embedding models and open-source libraries to a hosted retrieval platform with an agent on top. Autumn's releases split into two groups: file-type coverage that widens what Stores can ingest, and operational controls such as budgets, key scoping and attestations that production and procurement teams ask for.
Expect more ingestion formats and enterprise controls on the same cadence, since both have been shipping almost every release cycle. Toast 1's tool surface is likely to keep following the OpenAI API shapes it already matches.
