What is Expo?

Expo shut down its own coding agent and kept the MCP server — it wants to be the substrate.

Two SDK releases landed in quick succession, 56 in May and 57 at the end of June, alongside steady EAS work: Maestro test insights with flake detection, automated iOS device registration in Workflows, and a general availability date for EAS Observe. On the AI side the direction reversed — the Expo MCP Server became available on the free plan in May, and in July the Expo Agent closed beta ended with the project wound down. Entry bodies in this feed are thin, so specifics beyond the headlines are limited.

What is werf?

Four channels, one fix stream — werf's releases are mostly concurrency repairs.

werf publishes the same work across alpha, beta, ea, and stable channels plus a 3.x dev line, so a single fix surfaces three or four times under different version numbers. The substance in this window is almost entirely build-engine concurrency: parallel recovery failures, races in Dockerfile builds, concurrent stderr access, serialized base image pulls, retries when a cached image id goes missing. New function is thin — a case-insensitive-condition-tracking feature gate, a build time summary in debug mode, and a registry-side cleanup report.

Expo shut down its own coding agent and kept the MCP server — it wants to be the substrate.

◆ Current state

Two SDK releases landed in quick succession, 56 in May and 57 at the end of June, alongside steady EAS work: Maestro test insights with flake detection, automated iOS device registration in Workflows, and a general availability date for EAS Observe. On the AI side the direction reversed — the Expo MCP Server became available on the free plan in May, and in July the Expo Agent closed beta ended with the project wound down. Entry bodies in this feed are thin, so specifics beyond the headlines are limited.

◆ Where it's heading

Expo is consolidating around the build, test, and observe pipeline it already owns and stepping back from competing on the agent itself. Making the MCP server free while retiring Expo Agent puts the company underneath whichever assistant a developer already uses, rather than asking them to adopt another one. EAS is where the commercial weight sits, and the recent releases all reduce the manual work between a commit and a working build on a device.

◆ Prediction

Expect EAS Observe's August general availability to anchor the next stretch, with AI effort staying on the MCP surface that connects outside assistants to Expo projects.

Four channels, one fix stream — werf's releases are mostly concurrency repairs.

◆ Current state

werf publishes the same work across alpha, beta, ea, and stable channels plus a 3.x dev line, so a single fix surfaces three or four times under different version numbers.

◆ Where it's heading

The 3.x dev line is accumulating what 2.x is stabilizing, and the one genuinely new thing in it is a deno binary embedded into werf releases behind a build tag. That is the only entry pointing anywhere beyond maintenance, and it is gated, so its intent is not yet stated. Otherwise the pattern is a mature build tool hardening buildah paths under parallelism, which is where self-hosted CI hits it hardest.

◆ Prediction

The embedded deno work is the thread to watch — if it stays behind its build tag it is an experiment, and if 3.x ships it on by default it implies a scripting surface for deployment.
