What is edina?

A finished psychometric estimator kept alive by toolchain upkeep, not new modeling work.

edina is a single-purpose Rcpp/Armadillo implementation of the Exploratory DINA model, feature-complete since its 2020 debut. Its entire visible surface — estimation plus Q-matrix comparison across k values — has not changed in five years. The only 2025 activity is a maintenance release that raises the R, Rcpp and RcppArmadillo floors so the package still compiles.

What is remora?

Australia's animal-tracking QC toolkit added a global 3-D ocean dataset, then spent two years absorbing upstream churn.

remora quality-controls acoustic telemetry detections from the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility and joins them to environmental data. Its capability surface settled with the 0.8-0 release, which added Bluelink reanalysis access and an interactive QC plot. Since then the work has been keeping data access fast and correct as the upstream providers change underneath it.

A finished psychometric estimator kept alive by toolchain upkeep, not new modeling work.

◆ Current state

edina is a single-purpose Rcpp/Armadillo implementation of the Exploratory DINA model, feature-complete since its 2020 debut. Its entire visible surface — estimation plus Q-matrix comparison across k values — has not changed in five years. The only 2025 activity is a maintenance release that raises the R, Rcpp and RcppArmadillo floors so the package still compiles.

◆ Where it's heading

The gap between 0.1.1 and 0.1.2 is over five years, and 0.1.2 contains no modeling changes at all: dependency floors, a Makevars cleanup for newer Armadillo, a Quarto README, a CITATION fix for CRAN notes, and refreshed CI. This is custodial maintenance of a research artifact rather than active development. The same release landed across the maintainer's other packages the same morning — rrum got a near-identical body ten minutes earlier — which marks it as a lab-wide compatibility sweep, not an edina-specific push.

◆ Prediction

Expect the next release to be another compatibility bump triggered by an Armadillo or Rcpp change rather than new estimation features, on a similar multi-year cadence.

Australia's animal-tracking QC toolkit added a global 3-D ocean dataset, then spent two years absorbing upstream churn.

◆ Current state

remora quality-controls acoustic telemetry detections from the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility and joins them to environmental data. Its capability surface settled with the 0.8-0 release, which added Bluelink reanalysis access and an interactive QC plot. Since then the work has been keeping data access fast and correct as the upstream providers change underneath it.

◆ Where it's heading

The package's releases are paced by its dependencies rather than by feature ambition. The 2023 release had to survive the retirement of rgeos and rgdal — an ecosystem-wide deadline that forced every R spatial package to rebuild — and used the same release to add real capability. The 2025 release is entirely reactive in a different way, tracking an AODN metadata schema change that split one project-name field into two and swapping in tidync for faster environmental downloads. For a tool bound to a national data facility, schema changes at the source are the main release trigger.

◆ Prediction

Expect the next release to track further IMOS or AODN metadata changes and continue tuning environmental data access, since two consecutive releases have been driven by upstream schema and package retirements rather than new analysis features.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between edina and remora?

Both compete on the same themes — r-package — within Analytics. edina and remora are shipping at a similar cadence (velocity 0.0 vs 0.0, both within Sparkpulse's "active" band). See the at-a-glance table above for a side-by-side breakdown of velocity, recent sparks, and editorial themes.

Is edina better than remora?

Sparkpulse doesn't pick a winner — we score release velocity, not feature parity. edina and remora are shipping at a similar cadence (velocity 0.0 vs 0.0, both within Sparkpulse's "active" band).
