A side-by-side editorial comparison of Contour and Snort 3 — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Three supported branches, patched in lockstep within the same minute.
Contour maintains 1.31, 1.32 and 1.33 concurrently and releases them together — the February batch went out across three branches inside two minutes, and the March batch did the same. The content is almost entirely inherited: Envoy bumps to pick up security fixes, Go updates, and a gRPC update for a CVE that Contour explicitly notes it is not affected by.
Snort 3.13.2 is a broad bounds-checking sweep across SMB, HTTP and industrial protocol parsers
Snort 3.13.2.0, released 5 November, is a large roll-up that mostly bounds and validates input: SMB header checks, a fix for an SMB inspection bypass via crafted keep-alive lengths, OLE2 VBA heap fixes, MMS and DNP3 length limits, and a heap out-of-bounds write in the Unix transport. It also adds new http_inspect alerts for malformed or oversized headers, file cache control commands, and appid support for MCP inspector verdicts. The 3.13 line requires the Talos LightSPD rules package from 14 September onward because of an API bump in 3.13.0.0.

This is a proxy whose release cadence is governed by its data plane rather than its own feature work. Envoy security releases set the schedule, and Contour's job is to bump, verify compatibility and ship across every supported branch simultaneously. The changes that do originate in Contour are operational sharp edges found in production: an HTTPProxy CRD schema wrongly marking a status error field as required, which broke load balancer status updates, and shutdown-manager being CPU-throttled at a 50m limit.
The next release will almost certainly be another simultaneous three-branch batch triggered by an Envoy security bump, since both batches in this window followed exactly that pattern.

Memory safety and input bounding now dominate every release, with feature work limited to new alerts and operator controls. The appid line about MCP inspector verdicts is the one hint that Snort is starting to classify AI agent traffic, though the entry gives no detail.
Expect more parser hardening in 3.13.3 and a 3.12.x maintenance release alongside it; whether MCP inspection becomes a documented feature is unclear from these entries.
