A side-by-side editorial comparison of Claude and Continue — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Claude completes the 5.5 family in 15 days and starts paying subscribers to build on its API
Claude now ships all three 5.5 tiers: Opus on September 22, Sonnet on September 28, Haiku on October 7. Around the models, the product has merged chat and Cowork into one surface, opened a plugin directory with developer review and analytics, and added enterprise-facing pieces like Salesforce skills and smart reports.
Continue ships a 'final release' of its VS Code extension and stops shipping notes after it.
In mid-June Continue cut what it calls the final stable release of its VS Code extension: it removed the CLI-install banner and Generate Rule, moved onboarding and new configs to explicit model definitions instead of Hub slugs, and updated a deprecation banner's export link. Two bare 2.0.0 and 2.1.0 tags followed with no notes.

The pattern is a model family released as a set, with each rung cheaper than the last, while the app absorbs agent, document and plugin features that used to sit behind separate modes. The October 7 API credits for Max and Team plans connect the consumer subscription to the developer platform, so subscribers are pushed toward building their own apps and agents, not only chatting.
With the 5.5 family complete, the next entries are likely to be platform and plugin-directory work aimed at the builders the new API credits create; the entries give no signal yet on the next model generation.

Through March the extension was in ordinary maintenance: JetBrains freeze fixes, dependency bumps, .continue/configs support and workspace-scoped history. June turns that into a wind-down, stripping Hub-dependent paths and pointing users at an export. The 2.x tags look like version housekeeping rather than a revival, because they carry no user-facing notes.
Expect few or no annotated extension releases from here. Whether the 2.x line carries real work is unclear until a 2.x release ships with notes.
