Linkerd keeps trading features for fewer operational surprises — 2.20 is tuning, not expansion.

Linkerd 2.20 in June brought rate-limit-aware load balancing, lower memory use, and better inbound metrics; 2.19 before it replaced the TLS stack with post-quantum key exchange by default. The autopilot work is not a single feature but a rebuild of how the firmware handles position: the release notes show position control unified on a velocity primitive and the existing GPS rescue reimplemented as a flight-plan mission rather than a special case. That direction pulls hardware integration along with it — DroneCAN node allocation, GNSS Fix2, ESC telemetry and MAVLink ground-station handshaking are all things a manually flown craft does not need. The SITL harness gained fidelity and per-run session ids in the same releases, which is what you build when autonomous behaviour has to be regression-tested rather than test-flown.
With GPS rescue now running through the mission engine, the next releases on this line should concentrate on hardening that path — the release candidates already added an rx-loss policy, sanity checks and an arming gate for flight plans, and safety scaffolding of that kind usually keeps accumulating after the feature ships.

The project is optimising for boring reliability at scale rather than adding surface, consistent with Buoyant's stated goal of a mesh that lasts and its focus on operational simplicity. Recent releases target the failure modes operators actually hit: proxies dying before the app during shutdown, memory footprint per pod, load balancing that respects downstream rate limits. Federation and multi-cluster work is the one direction that could widen scope, and it currently shows up as writing rather than shipped features.
Expect the next release to continue on data-plane efficiency and multi-cluster reliability; on the evidence here, cluster federation is the most likely candidate to move from blog post to product.
