A side-by-side editorial comparison of AnythingLLM and Cherry Studio — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
AnythingLLM puts a local model engine inside its Docker image
AnythingLLM v1.19.0 adds an optional built-in LLM for Docker, using AMD's open-source Lemonade server with llama.cpp, so a container no longer needs Ollama or LM Studio beside it. It stays off until ENABLE_BUILT_IN_LLM is set. The same release adds instance color palettes, while the releases before it brought a local LLMman provider, Google Vertex AI and image generation across more providers.
The v2 rewrite has shipped; Cherry Studio is back to patch releases.
Cherry Studio spent late July running a v2.0.0 release train - three betas and five release candidates inside two weeks - to land a rewrite that had merged into main while v1 code still sat alongside it. The feed never carried a v2.0.0 GA note: it jumps from rc.5 on 4 August to v2.0.6 on 17 August, a single Files-page fix. The only entry since is an mlx-node package tag from 14 October whose commit subject is an Azure URL preview fix, so the feed shows little after the rewrite.

The embedded-runtime pattern that began on the desktop with Foundry Local and GenieX has now reached the server deployment. Each step removes a separate inference process that users had to install and connect. Between feature drops, contributor fixes to connectors, collectors and provider edge cases fill the notes, and 1.19.0 also caps unauthenticated embed request bodies.
Expect the Docker engine to keep gaining hardware and model-management options, since it now works everywhere a provider can be used. Color palettes are the one stated plan: the notes commit to deeper UI and layout customization.

The release train's substance was migration safety rather than new capability - preserving model endpoint routing, stopping table-recreate migrations from silently deleting child rows, keeping Claude session and workspace continuity, restoring guarded v1 style migration. Provider work continued underneath it, with Gemma 4 thinking in Ollama, a Radeon Cloud integration, and a configurable default endpoint. The priority through the whole train was getting existing users across the v1/v2 boundary with their data and settings intact.
The move back to provider and agent features that the rc series pointed to is not yet visible; the feed has carried no app release since August. Whether that is a quiet period or releases missing from this feed is unclear.
